Sculptor Bio
Jimmy Rix
My sculptures often relate to personal experiences and encounters with animals. Whether decades-long, or fleeting, for me these connections are always meaningful. Having lived within both natural and farmed Australian landscapes throughout my life, rebellious kangaroos, majestic owls, loved household pets as well as wild visitors such as foxes and ravens are recurring protagonists in my narrative-based works.
I was born in 1971 at Allora, Queensland, and grew up on a cattle and crop property on the Darling Downs. Living on the land shaped my interest in sculpture, Australiana and animals both domestic and wild.
I have a deep interest in aboriginal culture, and this was shaped at an early age as our property and surrounding area was home to a number of sacred sites.
I moved to Malmsbury in the Macedon Ranges in Victoria in 2017 and bought a hobby farm where I live and work and run a small amount of cattle. The traditional owners of this land are the Dja Dja Wurrung.
