Big Red’ is from a large Pokolbin greygum that has stood in the middle of a grazing paddock for more than 100 years.
The tree was probably felled for commercial construction in Newcastle. It is very durable timber but quickly loses its colour if left in the elements.
Big Red’s happy place is undercover in a restaurant or home with regular applications of acrylic clear finish. It is mounted on an Australian red cedar base with a brass spike.

Big Red | 2025
Based in Port Stephens I see creatures in forgotten wood, driftwood, or storm-fallen timber, weathered and worn by time and tide. It's tortured and scared. Others see firewood, I see creatures/animals in the twisted grain.
Modern and traditional hand tools, chisels, spoke shaves and adze bring new life to old wood.
I think my sculptures have personality, are expressive, tactile and sometimes abstract.
I celebrate the texture and "scars" of the timber, allowing the natural imperfections to shape the final form. Perfect replicas can be 'machine made'....I don't do that.
