Location

Given an opportunity, all life moves towards better conditions. It is not just people that escape war zones and other threats ? Serengeti migrations, geese in winter, schools of fish to name a few ? all seeking food, better conditions or escaping predators.

Caraconicles are imaginary figures travelling, like a family unit, a group of beings moving with the same purpose. There is solidarity, a unity, and there may be comfort and safety in that. And so there is hope.

The attack on Ukraine, and the consequent movement of peoples away from the war zone made me think about refugees and migration. All life moves to escape threats and find better conditions. And so I felt it important not to single out humans.

Caraconicles have their own presence, quietly moving together towards a more hopeful existence. They are symbolic of family, friends, safety, hope.

Sculptor Bio

Simon Lownsborough

Simon Lownsborough

For many years I worked as a graphic designer, studying painting and life drawing part-time.
In 2016 I took a short course in silversmithing at the Jam Factory, subsequently making wearables and becoming a contributing artist to Jam Factory and Zu design, amongst others.

A desire to develop my artistic voice led me to begin making sculpture, holding my first solo show (Lonely Diamond in 2021).

In 2024 I won the Urunga Small Sculpture Prize and was a finalist in the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize.
