Location

Subsurface draws from the visual language of core samples and buried infrastructure. Cast in concrete with rusted steel embedded through its form, the sculpture references an architectural biopsy ? a fragment extracted from beneath the surface. The cylindrical body appears weathered and partially eroded, revealing material layers and construction logic. The steel arc suggests a structure in tension: held, pinned, or cut. This work reflects my ongoing interest in how architecture and material collect memory.

Sculptor Bio

Samantha Hanicar

Samantha Hanicar

I am an Australian-Croatian sculptor working primarily with cast concrete. After 14 years as a gallery assistant, I recently stepped away to focus on my own sculptural practice, which I began quietly in 2022.

My work investigates how architecture and material hold memory, drawing on fragments such as slabs, core samples, and foundations.

Influenced by brutalist architecture and post-war infrastructure, I create cast forms that suggest excavation, buried systems, and the slow erosion of built environments — objects that sit between construction and collapse, surface and depth.
