I started this work years ago and have subsequently reworked it and reconsidered the base carefully.
This sculpture was originally part of a larger work, the remaining ‘body’ was lost in a studio fire – she has always felt unsettled or incomplete to me up until now as I believe she has been looking for the rest of her body.
The Watcher feels finally to have arrived as the simple abstract wooden forms suggest her missing self. I was influenced by the work of Brancusi when considering the wooden sections in relation to the bronze and how the illusion of the rest of the body is imparted by the sections that support the bronze or marble, usually in Brancusi’s case, wood, balancing the sculptural component without creating a distraction.

A traditional atelier training at the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio in Sydney in the 90’s focusing on the life study has informed my work consistently throughout my 30 year practice.

2006, awarded an Australia Council Residency in China, collaborating with fabrication yards and highly skilled artisans led to an exploratory and formative period artistically.
In 2003, a residency in Paris and the Loire Valley, France was instrumental in my use of found objects derived from historical properties and places leading to breaking the idea of a solid form into component parts.
