Leanne Berelowitz
I have been making ceramic sculptures for twenty years, exploring the concept of change. Through the transitions of immigration and raising children, my earlier dense, torn and tangled objects have moved towards simpler pared down structures using the continuity of the Moebius strip as inspiration. Using ribbons of clay that I create on a pottery wheel, I play with lines, thickness and negative space to explore forms that are simultaneously grounded and in motion.
Born in 1969 in South Africa, I was raised in Johannesburg and moved to Israel as a young adult. I lived in Jerusalem for 10 years, before moving to Australia in 2005. A former ICU nurse, I transitioned to ceramics after travels in London awakened my interest in art. I studied Fine Arts at Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, and a Masters of Cross-Disciplinary Art and Design at UNSW in Sydney. I live and work on Gadigal Land, co-managing and teaching ceramics at Bondi Pavilion, and developing my sculpture in the liminal spaces of daily life.
