Michael Rumble
Based in Port Stephens I see creatures in forgotten wood, driftwood, or storm-fallen timber, weathered and worn by time and tide. It’s tortured and scared. Others see firewood, I see creatures/animals in the twisted grain.
Modern and traditional hand tools, chisels, spoke shaves and adze bring new life to old wood.
I think my sculptures have personality, are expressive, tactile and sometimes abstract.
I celebrate the texture and “scars” of the timber, allowing the natural imperfections to shape the final form. Perfect replicas can be ‘machine made’….I don’t do that.
