Location

These trees were used to build wharfs and commercial buildings in Newcastle. His head and neck are part of the lateral roots and his tail is part of the tree trunk.
‘Back Creek Bill’ is from one piece of timber but only a very small segment of the whole tree.
Like all timber it will deteriorate and lose colour in the open weather, so I recommend that it be kept undercover and resealed occasionally.

Sculptor Bio

Michael Rumble

Michael Rumble

Based in Port Stephens I see creatures in forgotten wood, driftwood, or storm-fallen timber, weathered and worn by time and tide. It's tortured and scared. Others see firewood, I see creatures/animals in the twisted grain.

Modern and traditional hand tools, chisels, spoke shaves and adze bring new life to old wood.

I think my sculptures have personality, are expressive, tactile and sometimes abstract.

I celebrate the texture and "scars" of the timber, allowing the natural imperfections to shape the final form. Perfect replicas can be 'machine made'....I don't do that.
