Based on the Galapagos Tortoise, this sculpture celebrates these animals that have existed for so many centuries in their own environment until man drove them to the brink of extinction. We need to be reminded, and maintain awareness of our impact on the ecological systems around us. The environment was in trouble long before Climate Change!

Sculptor Bio

Al Phemister

Al Phemister

I work with industrial materials to create organic and natural forms.  I imbue a sense of gentleness and movement into works to create a new object to challenge our perception of the re-use of materials.  I believe that beauty can be repeatedly created from whatever we have at hand, as long as we use ingenuity, integrity and artistic endeavour.

These preloved items become the parts that I use to create a whole – something new that inspires wonder.  I take hard, rusted, steel forms and imbue them with a sense of gentleness and movement.

From my workshop in Yass in regional New South Wales, I create these decorative forms from everyday and industrial objects. Where I capture the delicacy and fragility of the environment around me.

Inspired by the natural environment, my wife and my family,  my work reflects my love for them and their home.

As a leading advocate for local and regional artists, I support and promote local art shows, festivals and am the curator of a permanent exhibition showcasing regional artists.
