‘Just the Tip’ – a snap-frozen moment making comment about Arctic/Antarctic zones and geographical changes affecting our physical world.
Chris works with small light-weight components, predominantly fashioned from factory-floor discards, continuing their life while at the same time, focussing on matters relevant to our future life.
The finely fabricated pieces reflect both the intimacy of producing small hand-made forms and the refinement of the machined-product reminiscent of the refrigeration plant in Orange NSW, from which many materials were originally sourced.

Chris Cowell
I have been involved in sculptural practice in my yurt-studio, in Orange NSW (since 2012). My background is in Visual Arts education in NSW High Schools 1975-2011.
I work with lightweight materials, with recent focus on repurposing industry discarded materials from the factory floor. Thermoplastics, aluminium, copper tubing & stainless-steel wire appeal for their particular qualities. I create small polished components from these masses, delicately worked, reflecting the intimate nature of the handmade form.
My works constantly reference Arctic and Antarctic geographical processes and structure.
Born in Sydney, raised in the country for a start and back to Sydney for high school education, to Newcastle for National Art School and Teachers College/CAE before heading out to a mix of city and country high schools and central schools over 37 years.
Sculpture has always been a major passion but so too are the many facets of design, especially visual design, photographic and digital design practices.
