The Defiant | 2023
$12,000
This sculpture is that of a highly abstracted person standing defiantly in front of the viewer. The Defiant represents those who stand up to brutes and bullies to preserve their freedom, values and culture. Whislt inspired by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, some have remarked that it has a bit of a Ned Kelly look. It consists of salvaged stainless steel.
The sculpture comes with a mounting plate that would enable easy installation on a concrete plinth.

I have always had an interest in sculpture but only began steel sculpture in 2019 after doing a National Art School short course. My first exhibition was at Sculpture on the Farm in 2019. I experiment with several styles of steel sculpture using found/recycled steel, largely with waxed and oxidised finishes. Major influences include David Smith (early works in particular) and Julio Gonzalez. My work represents a collision between Cubist leanings, a sensitivity to the provenance and innate aesthetics of the steel, a soupçon of humour and my commitment to an environmentally sustainable art practice.
I was born in France (La Rochelle) but have lived in Australia for over 50 years. I sculpt in my workshop in the Blue Mountains (Springwood) using locally salvaged steel. In some cases, the steel is found in the bush around the area.
