Location

During a residency in Portland, NSW, I undertook the process of hollowing out a 6 metre log to create a canoe form. This involved using a chainsaw to remove large chunks of wood from the centre then using a hand held tool called an adze to remove smaller amounts and give it a curved interior.

The process was a constant chipping away at the material to give the final form.

Sculptor Bio

Nigel Dobson

I primarily work creating large steel sculpture, however on a number of residencies I have undertaken hollowing out a log to create a canoe form. The main aspect of the work comes in the physical act of removing the core of the log and the process that comes with that.

In the past I have also sent the log out on a body of water and lit a fire in the middle to leave no remaining object, just the remembering of the process in the hand made.
