Sculptor Bio

Feyona Van Stom

Feyona Van Stom

I am Australian, my background is Dutch and Scottish.
I went to art school in USA and in Australia, and I continue my art practice almost every day.
My main interest is in Sculpture - usually the human body and its movements, and I also Paint - enjoying the colours
I love to visit both small and large galleries, and have travelled the world to catch the amazing artworks.

I have also exhibited in USA, China, India and HK.
I am always searching for new firings for the sculptures and I also have several sculptures that I've cast in bronze.

Exhibitions

I have exhibited in Australia in small towns and large cities - each one is interesting and amazing.

I am always searching for new techniques and firings for the sculptures I make, blackfiring, Raku, woodfiring, as well as in kilns, usually in pottery, also in glass, but I also have sculptures that I've had cast in bronze.

I have owned two successful galleries in Sydney - one in Whale Beach and one in Woolloomooloo, showing my own artworks, and many artists works from Australia and internationally. My own work has been in many large and small towns in Australia.

International Experience

I was invited and selected with 26 International sculptors to each make a work in Changsha, Hunan province in China.
The sculptures were all to be either 3 and a half meters tall or long. Mine is tall, a female body.
We worked for 5 weeks, daily, in a large park, with thousands of visitors watching us work daily ( no time off until you finish).
I made my sculpture in raw clay collected from the hillside. When finished it was cast in bronze, and is now on display in Wetlands park in Changsha, on the waters edge of a purpose built lake, with a large pagoda in the centre of an island.
'Windswept of Changsha' will stay there indefinitely.
We were also required to lecture in several Chinese universities, with translators, which was an amazing experience, as was the whole trip.

I was invited to have a solo exhibition in Bangalore, India - with 45 works representing figures, like the ones found in 27 ancient caves discovered in the mountains of Ajunta, nearby.
I made the work specifically for this exhibition - with the help of a large book on the Ajunta caves.
In Bangalore, I also lectured and visited and made works with other local sculptors. My work was quite different to my usual style, and yet the same - it was an amazing experience.

I was invited to exhibit my works at SOFA, N.Y and Chicago USA - and successfully, for 5 years.
In NY. the exhibition, from countries all over the world, was held in a huge building 'the Armory’.
I also was invited and exhibited my works in galleries in NY and some other cities in USA.

I have been President of The Sculptors Society for 14 years and Vice President before, that - the longest serving President in TSS history, and loved working with our artists, finding new venues both in the city and outside, and worked on all aspects of preparing works for exhibition.

I have worked on other committees including Harbour Sculpture - and also have been invited to open exhibitions and judge exhibitions - all good experiences.

My work has travelled all over the world (even to the Canary Islands), which means my works grace people's homes I will never see, taking my sculpture into their lives.
