This is the 6th work in the Left Behind series of 8. Left Behind is inspired by my years of humanitarian work with displaced populations in post-conflict areas.
For me the works represent precious belongings left to decay when families have been forced to rapidly flee their homes.
Cardboard, also discarded and left to decay, was clearly the best material to capture their meaning. Materials also include recycled wood, metal, dyes, acrylic paint and mediums.

Syan Williams
Based in Newcastle NSW, I am a conceptual thinker who ‘deep-maps’ place in abstract 2- and 3-dimensional works through mixed media painting, drawing, sculpture and photography.
Deep-mapping for me means exploring place and happenings through sociological, cultural, personal, historical and environmental perspectives.
For several years, developing new techniques in cardboard sculpture has been a major focus for me. The beauty of this recyclable material has captivated my imagination and, through iteration processes of moulding and glazing, led me to discover how cardboard can be transformed into a seemingly new form of being.
