Crochet is my favourite media. I learned young, from family, who themselves learned from previous generations. Crochet fascinates, because simply tying knots in diverse materials results in exquisitely fine to robust pieces. And the knots? Magic, algebraic formulae produces 3D forms. Padded, wired, weighted, wearable too. My crochet is quirky, drawing on traditional skills.

Crochet has always been part of my life, but I have shown works for around 35 years.

During that time I have tutored crochet workshops, most recently presenting workshops for organisations mainly in the Upper Hunter. Passing on skills and enthusiasm for crochet is enjoyable.

Exhibitions

During 2023/24 I was one of the Liddell WORKS Project artists in residence. I produced a series of hats, primarily “Thinking Caps for Lady Liddell”, crocheted “hardhats” as fetishes for an industrial deity. These were part of the WORKS Project exhibitions at Muswellbrook and Singleton galleries.

During the last year I have mainly been working in the Muswellbrook area on public projects, murals and installations, including 3D works for Muswellbrook Shire Council’s Schools EcoStories Competitions. These include the recent “Found Sound” fence work at Martindale- an approximately 15m x 2m sculptural construction made with repurposed materials which passively and interactively makes sounds and music.

My crochet and other works have won a variety of awards, from Hunter Valley agricultural shows, to Sydney Royal, and at various Arts organisations in the Hunter.

My work has been commissioned by a US based yarn company and the resulting full-length “wingwraps” were shown on the runway of the Crochet Guild of America.

I love to make whimsical, colourful hats and estimate that I have sold around 1000 since the year 2000, with commissions and sold works going to every continent in the world, including Antarctica.
