Exploring material vitality. I want to be disinterested, to view these material constructions, to take their material presence, their posture, the vitality inherent in their structure and see where they sit. To allow them to be practically nothing and vitally present.
This work forms part of my Valkyrie Series. The Valkyries are very much part of Norse Mythology, they were the female maidens who chose which of the dead were carried to Valhalla.
This sculpture Taking Flight is part of an evolving theme in my work: using abstract, organic shapes to create the figurative and the anthropomorphic.
You want me to conform? To be practical? To live according to your rules? To throw away my dreams? To stop living because of the current situation?
I don’t think so!
We traditionally associated gym toned men with arrogance, confidence, wanting to show off their bodies.
SHY GUY is the antithesis of this. He is very uncomfortable being nude, judged or admired.
During the early 1990’s King drew on the mythical entities of antiquity amongst other stimuli. Nayads, a patinated bronze maquette, is an assemblage of cut-out shapes, including arms and legs, which suggest an anthropomorphic being in flight. The flat abstract shapes convey considerable movement and energy as this nymph-like creature dashes across the plane.
Birds, in flight as well as momentarily stationary, were a reoccurring refrain in King’s work throughout her long career. Birdman conveys a bird-like creature, suggestive of a human figure. The tension within the different elements and planes of the sculpture gives it an unexpected dignity and poise, perhaps reminiscent of an indigenous dancer
It takes great skill to balance everything modern life throws at us. The sculpture illustrates we are all capable of amazing feats if we keep an open mind and remain flexible and willing to change.
