Roger Head

Born in Melbourne in 1946, Roger Head practised Diagnostic Radiology in Sydney until his retirement, and subsequently completed a BFA (Hons), Sculpture at the National Art School. The work presented in this exhibition is a group of wooden maquette, produced in the final year of the NAS course. They are formal modern pieces constructed of wood, architectonic in form, and they reflect the influence of my sculpture teachers, particularly Ron Robertson-Swan, David Horton and Jim Croke.

Sculpture is the language that I use to explore my relationship with the world around me.  Stone is my primary medium. The mass of stone appeals to me, the cool surfaces, the rough and the smooth. Carving stone is a laborious process; work evolves slowly. Once a chip has been removed, there is no going back. I work with traditional tools of hammer, chisel and rasp; each blow is carefully considered. Stone carving is an enduring artform. I am conscious of being part of a centuries long tradition and feel a responsibility to produce sculpture of lasting value. Born Macclesfield UK 1965. Migrated to Australia 1990 Started sculpting 2015 Works in Sandgate NSW, on the land of the Worimi (Awabakal) Prizes 2022 Sculpture in the Gardens – recipient of The Sculptors Society Sensory prize and the Moolarben acquisitive prize Education BSc(Hons) Geology MAppSc Engineering and Environmental Geology Professional Practice My art is a natural progression from a childhood interest in rocks and beach combing, through a career as a geologist, to working stone as a sculptor. I like to work…

David Stott

A few years ago I moved to Dungog, this provided me with a large yard, garage and shed to expand and store materials, ideal for the collection and to work on a larger scale. Employed in the maintenance field this has enabled me to try different processes, use different tools and grow my practical skills. So I have no formal arts training but last year I enrolled part time at Newcastle Uni for a fine arts degree.

Edward Ramsay

Ed Ramsay of The Edge of Nature has been designing and producing beautiful sculptured furniture and functional art for over 20 years. From four poster beds in the vineyards and huge entry doors for churches to small wombats in the garden, Ed has worked on a wide scale of projects. The finish on each piece is so tactile, people often can’t resist running their hands over the surface. He and his wife Barb run a small-scale gallery workshop from their home and also attend monthly specialty artisan markets to sell their smaller pieces.
