Hugh McLachlan

Figurative sculpture has always had a strong attraction for me. Sensuous figurative forms seemingly in a state of flow. The polished surface of the figures wear the environment as a second skin, as the light and reflections change so does the sculpture, always dynamic. I make my Sculptures from marine grade stainless steel, the highly polished  fluid lines of the figure gives the impression the sculpture is somehow poured into a mould. Nothing could be further from the truth. The sculpture starts life as pieces of heavy stainless steel rods and plate and are welded, ground and polished. I was born in Alexandra Victoria in 1955 and studied Gold & Silversmithing & Sculpture at RMIT 1974-77, Mary and I moved to Deloraine in Tasmania in 1980 and established McLachlan Studio. Our 50 acre property is on the bank of the Meander River 6 kilometres from Deloraine. My sculpture is a response to changing states where the sculpture, through the illusion of a highly polished surface, appears to flow, when in reality it is very hard stainless steel. I find the…

James Bunter

Having traversed though at least 8 of his 9 lives to date, James Bunter has found himself yet again, reborn this this into the world of sculpting. Presiding in the Southern Highlands, James, a stone mason by trade was always a practitioner of the arts, but now, perhaps, found his perfect medium to explore his many lives lived and lost. Now ready to share, his most intimate knowledge of the world in the only way he can. Guided by his late grandmother and her powerful influences, James spends his days on a Bundanoon farm immersed in the wonderment of nature, giving life to his art knowing this act alone may have saved him. Bound by no rules when the creative process takes hold and having no ‘formal’ training to hold him hostage, James explores the depths of his subconscious, predominantly using stone and timber to create his works. This symbiotic relationship produces pieces that embrace, the sometimes harsher realities of humankind intertwined with his undesirable respect for Mother Nature, mysticism, science, mythology and the wonder of which is which is…

Jeanette Hyde

Jeanette Hyde

I have always loved drawing, and enjoy the process of sketching with chalk on steel and then hand cutting with a plasma cutter. My designs are inspired by the abundant birdlife that frequent my rural home, and I seek to capture scenes in nature and the unique characteristics and interaction of its inhabitants. Together with my artist husband Jeff, I reside in the rural Victorian village of Jindivick. Surrounded by rolling hills and plentiful wildlife, our studio is in a disused dairy on our small farm. As a creative duo, we at times collaborate on projects to create sculptures that reflect a combination of our design styles. Since 2016 I have regularly exhibited at NSW Sculpture shows, (including Mudgee, Jindabyne, Bermagui, Orange, and Sculpture on the Farm, Dungog) together with Brighton Jetty Sculpture SA, Melbourne Flower and Garden Show, and other Victorian events. My work has also been commissioned as commemorative public art.

Primarily working with rusty steel and stainless steel, my designs are influenced by an attraction to spheres, geometric shapes and the impact of negative space. I am happy to experiment with techniques and allow the materials to dictate the shape and flow of the completed sculpture. My sculptures often relate to personal experiences and encounters with animals.  Whether decades-long, or fleeting, for me these connections are always meaningful. Having lived within both natural and farmed Australian landscapes throughout my life, rebellious kangaroos, majestic owls, loved household pets as well as wild visitors such as foxes and ravens are recurring protagonists in my narrative-based works. I was born in 1971 at Allora, Queensland, and grew up on a cattle and crop property on the Darling Downs. Living on the land shaped my interest in sculpture, Australiana and animals both domestic and wild. I have a deep interest in aboriginal culture, and this was shaped at an early age as our property and surrounding area was home to a number of sacred sites. I moved to Malmsbury in the Macedon Ranges in Victoria in 2017 and bought a hobby farm where I live and work and run a small amount of cattle. The traditional owners of this land are the Dja Dja Wurrung. Commissions 2018 ‘Stopping to Smell the Flowers’, Throsby, Canberra, commissioned by artsACT ‘Kangaroos with Callistemons’,…
