Rod Buckland

I started sculpting in 2016 mainly using scrap metal, a MIG welder and an oxy torch. I incorporate old tools, farm machinery, timber and occasionally other mediums to create unique one off pieces of sculpture. I have developed my Sculpting style over the years by finding unique shapes that mimic nature whether they are lying in a scrap heap or items listed on the market place as my inspiration and ideas. I am a born and bred local from Toowoomba Queensland. I discovered my passion for making sculptures back in 2016 when my mother Robyn, who is an avid frog collector, asked me if he could make her a steel frog. The project was put into motion in my backyard shed.  I am a Boilermaker by trade and downed tools some 18 years ago and took up an office-based role in the structural steel industry. I mainly make one off pieces of art mainly from scrap metal and I try to incorporate a personal part in every sculpture whether it be an old spanner or a piece of machinery that…

Sallie Portnoy

I work with industrial materials to create organic and natural forms.  I imbue a sense of gentleness and movement into works to create a new object to challenge our perception of the re-use of materials.  I believe that beauty can be repeatedly created from whatever we have at hand, as long as we use ingenuity, integrity and artistic endeavour. These preloved items become the parts that I use to create a whole – something new that inspires wonder.  I take hard, rusted, steel forms and imbue them with a sense of gentleness and movement. Portnoy is a prolific interdisciplinary artist, working in glass, clay, metals, and mixed media. Her background in ceramics informs her work in glass, which has earned recognition and representation internationally in private and permanent collections. She studied ceramics at University of Manitoba and NSCAD in Canada and graduated from COFA (BA ceramics) and SCA, Sydney University (MSA glass). In recent years she has re-engaged in a ceramic practice at Northern Beaches TAFE Open Studio where she has been creating sculptural forms as well as thrown vessels….

Hugh McLachlan

Figurative sculpture has always had a strong attraction for me. Sensuous figurative forms seemingly in a state of flow. The polished surface of the figures wear the environment as a second skin, as the light and reflections change so does the sculpture, always dynamic. I make my Sculptures from marine grade stainless steel, the highly polished  fluid lines of the figure gives the impression the sculpture is somehow poured into a mould. Nothing could be further from the truth. The sculpture starts life as pieces of heavy stainless steel rods and plate and are welded, ground and polished. I was born in Alexandra Victoria in 1955 and studied Gold & Silversmithing & Sculpture at RMIT 1974-77, Mary and I moved to Deloraine in Tasmania in 1980 and established McLachlan Studio. Our 50 acre property is on the bank of the Meander River 6 kilometres from Deloraine. My sculpture is a response to changing states where the sculpture, through the illusion of a highly polished surface, appears to flow, when in reality it is very hard stainless steel. I find the…

James Bunter

Having traversed though at least 8 of his 9 lives to date, James Bunter has found himself yet again, reborn this this into the world of sculpting. Presiding in the Southern Highlands, James, a stone mason by trade was always a practitioner of the arts, but now, perhaps, found his perfect medium to explore his many lives lived and lost. Now ready to share, his most intimate knowledge of the world in the only way he can. Guided by his late grandmother and her powerful influences, James spends his days on a Bundanoon farm immersed in the wonderment of nature, giving life to his art knowing this act alone may have saved him. Bound by no rules when the creative process takes hold and having no ‘formal’ training to hold him hostage, James explores the depths of his subconscious, predominantly using stone and timber to create his works. This symbiotic relationship produces pieces that embrace, the sometimes harsher realities of humankind intertwined with his undesirable respect for Mother Nature, mysticism, science, mythology and the wonder of which is which is…

I have always loved drawing, and enjoy the process of sketching with chalk on steel and then hand cutting with a plasma cutter. My designs are inspired by the abundant birdlife that frequent my rural home, and I seek to capture scenes in nature and the unique characteristics and interaction of its inhabitants. Together with my artist husband Jeff, I reside in the rural Victorian village of Jindivick. Surrounded by rolling hills and plentiful wildlife, our studio is in a disused dairy on our small farm. As a creative duo, we at times collaborate on projects to create sculptures that reflect a combination of our design styles. Since 2016 I have regularly exhibited at NSW Sculpture shows, (including Mudgee, Jindabyne, Bermagui, Orange, and Sculpture on the Farm, Dungog) together with Brighton Jetty Sculpture SA, Melbourne Flower and Garden Show, and other Victorian events. My work has also been commissioned as commemorative public art.
